Bleak Historic Apartment Complex with Courtyard

by Film Location

This vacant, unrestored housing complex from 1917 comprises eight old-style apartment buildings. The two parallel blocks face each other, enclosing a sheltered courtyard of approximately 1,150 square meters. A charming, smaller rear courtyard of about 700 square meters lies behind the second block, bordered by an old brick wall.

The complex primarily reflects the fading charm of East Germany’s bygone era, though closer inspection reveals a mix of styles in windows, doors, and railings. Several ground-floor and first-floor apartments are thematically decorated, including a retiree’s apartment, a 1960s-style kitchen, a retro office, a colorful old-style flat, and a baroque-style fireplace room. Additionally, over 38 empty apartments in varying conditions provide flexible shooting options.

All locations are unheated in winter and lack electricity, running water, and functional plumbing. However, a power distribution box in the courtyard offers up to 63-amp three-phase power and standard current, enabling easy power setup for shoots. A portable toilet is available on-site.
